Hotmail phishing scam tricking everyone

Hotmail accounts are being hacked left and right by savvy hackers who are sending fake emails to people asking them to confirm their login information, and many people are falling for it and losing access to their accounts. If you see an email from Hotmail or Live with the subject Your Hotmail account has been suspended, do not respond to it. It is not legitimate, and you should ignore it.

What is the hotmail phishing scam?

Recently, many people have received emails claiming to be from Microsoft informing them that their account has been suspended. The emails ask the recipient to verify their information by clicking on a link in the email. What these people don’t know is this is actually a phishing scam where hackers will steal personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims. By simply clicking the link they are giving up everything to cybercriminals. A Microsoft spokesperson said We are aware of malicious messages circulating with false claims about restrictions on your Hotmail account. These types of scams can also affect other popular email providers such as Gmail or Yahoo Mail. If you receive an email telling you there is a problem with your mail, delete it and then go directly to your mail provider's website for help.

How the Hotmail scam works

E-mails with the subject line Hotmail Account Suspended have been popping up in people’s inboxes. The sender spoofs a legitimate Microsoft or Hotmail address and claims your account has been suspended. They then provide a link to click on to confirm your account information. This link will lead you to a site where they try to get you to enter your login credentials, which they will then steal and use for phishing purposes.

Protect yourself from this scam

One of the most popular email scams going around right now targets Hotmails users. The scammer will send an email to your account with a link to click on, which will lead you to a fake login page. When you go to enter your username and password, they are then used by the scammer and you're locked out of your account. To protect yourself from this scam, always remember never to click on any links within an email unless you know it's safe.
